one humble critic’s review

This masterfully produced scene from the Shakespeare play “Hamlet” by Anand, Daniel, Adie, and Amelia gave me chills from the very beginning of the elegant introduction. The music and the beautiful cursive really set the mood for the dramatic scene. Now the set was a little rough as it did not capture the darkness and true context of the scene, but the props and sound effects made up for it in their authenticity. The lighting when the deceased king’s spirit enters not only enhances the drama, but truly gives focus to the expertly designed and executed ghost figure. The actors were absolutely effusive with such raw emotion and showed dedication to their roles, making the scene realistic and engaging. The directing and the film style clearly show the experience and intensity behind the performance. Unfortunately, some of the lines were delivered very quietly or not annunciated correctly and Shakespeare’s words were lost to the wind, making parts of the scene confusing and misleading. There could have also been more blocking to draw the audience’s attention to the meaning and emotions behind the words being spoken. The conclusion was seamless and well executed. The final clip of the ghost for comedic effect lightened the mood while also leaving the message that the ghost is still out there and the story is not over. Overall, the production of Act I scene i was wonderfully done and shows professionalism and enthusiasm for the play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare. My rating: 8.74 stars out of 10.

  1. I wholeheartedly agree with you that some of the lines could have been delivered much better (some of mine in particular). I also was amused by your incredibly precise rating of our scene, so thank you!
