a couple of my 1984 analyses… steal away

Title: George Orwell titles his dystopian novel 1984 to subtly introduce the motif of questioned truth. Throughout the novel, fact becomes elusive as it is revealed that the Ministry of Truth actually destroys and changes fact and the party controls the past. At one point, Winston realizes that he is unsure whether it is the year 1984 or not. His memory is not dependable as the information he is fed changes on the whim of Big Brother and truth is ultimately unattainable.

Setting:
Airstrip One of Oceania (modern day London) where the Winston lives is described as a “grimy landscape” with “”rotting nineteenth-century houses” and “bomb sites where the plaster dust swirled in the air” (Orwell 3). These details work to illustrate the dilapidated state of the world and how dirt and dust accumulates similarly to how truth becomes clouded and sparse under the party’s rule.

  1. I really liked your analysis of the setting, and how most of the time the physical world is directly affected by the intangible principles adopted by the government. Great post!
